Nothing is more frustrating than having wiper blades or inserts leaving streaks on your windshield. So what some of the causes of this and what can be done?
- Road contaminants and grease – Both can build up on the glass and blades causing streaks, noise, judder, and smearing. Start by heading to the car wash or just simply clean the windshield. Next clean the rubber blade with a towel soaked in undiluted washer fluid. With all the grime and grease removed your wiper performance will be greatly increased.
- Old blades/inserts – If your blades are 6 months or older they may simply need to be replaced. Tiny cracks will form in the rubber over time that will cause the blades to not perform their best and lead to streaking. Areas with extreme high and low temperatures create additional stress on the rubber. If you live in an area of the country that experiences both a hot summer and cold winter, consider replacing your blades twice a year. Once right before winter and then again in the spring.
- Poor quality washer fluid – Don’t just buy any off-the-shelf fluid. Check and make sure the fluid will work for your particular climate. Look for “no smear” formulas, fluid with ingredients that will help remove bugs and dirt, and consider a concentrated formula instead of “ready-mixed”.
Nothing is better than being able to see where you are going. Maintaining your wipers will help ensure a better and safer driving experience.
